Earlier this year, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. announced their adoption of the internationally recognized Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards requiring their suppliers to complete initial certification between July and December of 2008 and full certification by July 2009.
The Global Food Safety Initiative, coordinated by CIES – The Food Business Forum, is a retailer-driven group, with manufacturer advisory members that provides strategic direction and guidance for food safety best practices. Under the umbrella of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), 7 of the world’s largest retailers including Wal-Mart and UK based Tesco, have come to a common acceptance of four GFSI benchmarked food safety schemes and are requiring their suppliers to comply with these standards.
