Description:
The explosive growth in outsourced manufacturing over the past 20 years has made this business model a de facto standard for Life Sciences companies that span the gamut, from emerging biopharmaceuticals to global pharmaceuticals. While lowering costs, focusing on core competencies, and mitigating financial and compliance risk are often cited as drivers for the outsourced business model, ultimate responsibility for the end-to-end safety and compliance of the product continues to reside with the marketer submitting a therapy for regulatory approval.
The question then becomes how to effectively capture, track, and manage quality information throughout the supply chain – a task made substantially more complex by the countless scenarios that could describe an organization’s outsource model. Some will outsource manufacturing and distribution logistics to one partner and have the contract manufacturer responsible for everything, leaving them only to pay for finished product. Others may have 15 or more outsource partnerships. Still others fall between these extremes and have multiple manufacturers, in cascading or toll processing supply chains. While nothing will decrease the volume and types of data that must flow between these outsource entities, Life Sciences organizations may be well advised to investigate advances in collaborative technology that promise to streamline and simplify the complexities of their outsource operations, including:
automated collection of data at all 3rd party sites
real-time status of all materials at all sites
notification in the event of 'out of tolerance' operations and CAPA resolution workflow
API to Wholesaler lot genealogy, QC controls, and in-transit tracking
optimization of demand and inventory planning at each location
costing, yield, and performance benchmarking and KPI dashboards across the supply chain
drastically lower risk and vastly improved supply chain operations
So while outsourced manufacturing offers an array of benefits to the Life Sciences community, it also harbors its own set of risks. Mitigating these risks starts with control over the management, capture, and tracking of quality information throughout the supply chain. Achieving this control is simplified considerably with the use of appropriate outsource collaboration tools. Join us to find out how!
